Best rollerball pen, writing instrument of the year 2024

Writing Instrument of the Year, two years running!

A Triumphant Return to the UK’s Biggest Stationery Event with best rollerball pen.

The 14th and 15th of May 2024 marked a special moment for Andhand as we returned to the London Stationery Show — the UK's only dedicated trade show focused exclusively on stationery. It's the key event for those passionate about paper goods, writing instruments, and beautifully crafted desk tools.

This year felt especially significant. After making our debut last year with the award-winning Method Mini Ballpoint Pen, returning with a new contender for best rollerball pen added extra excitement.

A Look Back – Andhand’s 2023 Success

In 2023, we attended the show for the first time and were blown away by the support and enthusiasm from the stationery community. One of the standout moments was receiving the Writing Instrument of the Year award for our Method Mini, a pen designed to deliver precision in a compact, pocketable form. It was our first major accolade — and a huge motivator.

2024: A Bigger Stand, A Bigger Moment

Fast forward to 2024, and we returned with an expanded product line and a larger stand at G120 to showcase it all. One section was dedicated entirely to the star of the show — our Aspect capless rollerball pen, now officially recognised as the best rollerball pen of the year.

Our stand G120, meticulously laid out just before the doors opened on day 1.

Crafted entirely from aluminum, the Aspect pen pairs minimalist aesthetics with practical engineering. It features a faceted, architectural design and a satisfying oversized click mechanism that stands out both visually and functionally.

What Makes the Aspect the Best Rollerball Pen?

1. Award-Winning Engineering
The Aspect uses the Schmidt P8127 capless rollerball refill, known for its smooth, expressive ink flow. It offers a fountain pen–like experience in a sleek, low-maintenance format. The internal mechanism was custom-designed to house a large-capacity refill in a compact form — something few pens in this category manage.

2. Versatility in Use
Another feature that helped the Aspect pen clinch the Best Rollerball Pen title is its refill flexibility. It can be easily converted into a ballpoint pen by switching to a compatible refill. This duality allows users to switch between fluid rollerball writing or more traditional oil-based ballpoint ink, depending on preference.

3. Built for Everyday Use
Despite its high-end feel, the Aspect pen is built to be a true everyday writing tool. Whether you’re journaling, signing documents, or sketching ideas, it fits naturally into daily routines. Its size and balance make it equally suited for home, office, or on-the-go use.

4. Stunning Colours & Finishes
Available in Blush Pink, Forest Green, Gold Lustre, and Slate Grey anodized finishes, the pen is both a design object and a functional writing tool — the kind of item you’ll want to leave on your desk and carry with you everywhere.

The Show Floor: Connection, Creativity & Community

This year’s Stationery Show wasn’t just about awards — it was about reconnecting with the community. We were delighted to see familiar faces from CoffeeNotes, Once Upon a Tuesday, and Storigraphic, all brands we’ve come to know and admire. We also met newcomers like Rebel Stationery and The Inspired Stories, whose fresh designs brought new energy to the floor.

We had countless great conversations with existing stockists and new retailers, including a memorable visit from Sarah at Pencil Me In (all the way from Elgin, Scotland!), who generously gifted us some custom pencils and shared valuable insights from the retail front lines.

The Moment of Truth

Midway through day one, we gathered around the central showcase display, where all finalists for Writing Instrument of the Year were presented. We were honoured to be shortlisted alongside industry giants like Kaweco, Pentel, Leuchtturm1917, and Retro 51 — all brands we greatly respect.

When it was announced that the Aspect pen had won, we were genuinely stunned. This marked our second consecutive win, making Andhand one of the few independent brands to take home this prestigious award two years running. The display in the center of the hall with all the finalists.Aspect pen comes in Forest Green, Blush Pink, Gold Lustre and Slate grey anodized finishes. Winner of the stationery awards writing instrument of the year 2024.

Why Recognition Matters

Winning Writing Instrument of the Year for the Aspect Pen validates our belief that tools for everyday writing can and should be beautifully made, thoughtfully engineered, and joyful to use.

Being recognized among the best in the industry reinforces our mission: to create products that elevate daily routines, celebrate intentional design, and honor the act of putting pen to paper.

The trophy now accompanies last years on the office window.

We now have two trophies proudly displayed in the studio — a visual reminder of the work behind the scenes and the support from our community that makes it all worthwhile.

Final Thoughts: What’s Next for the Best Rollerball Pen?

We left the London Stationery Show feeling inspired, re-energised, and grateful. The win is more than an accolade — it’s a challenge to keep improving and evolving. Whether through new materials, clever mechanics, or innovative formats, we’ll continue exploring what makes a pen not just good, but great.

So, if you’re searching for the best rollerball pen, one that combines performance, versatility, and award-winning design — the Andhand Aspect Pen is it.
